Sunday

ENNIS, Texas – In the final results from the Texas Motorplex and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Texas racers took home 8 of 10 trophies led by Bill Kent in Comp Eliminator and Norman Marsden in Super Stock.

Kent, Midland, Texas, clicked off a 6.689 second lap at 189.95 mph in his ’66 Chevy II to beat Denver City, Texas, racer Clark Smiley while Marsden won a close race against former Lucas Oil national champion Larry Stewart. Marsden got the advantage at the start and held on for the win.

Reigning Super Gas national champion Jeff Lopez, Bedford, Texas, scored his second divisional event win of the year taking out Shannon Brinkley, Highlands, Texas, and Harvey “Speedy” Emmons added another trophy to his collection defeating Jacob Pitt in Stock Eliminator.

Matt Driskell and Tom Williams were identical off the line in the Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster class with Driskell, Wellsville, Kan., taking the win in 6.588 seconds at over 200 mph to Williams’ 6.796, 198 mph.

Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La., had Allen Firestone covered on both ends of the tracks with a 0.004 second reaction time and a 6.552 on the scoreboard for the win in the Orteq Top Sportsman class.

Other winners this weekend were Austin Williams, Burleson, Texas, who drove around Scooter Choate for the win in Super Comp; Charlie Owens, White Oak, Texas, went seven rounds in Super Street; and Larry Eperjesi, Lake Dallas, Texas, won in the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson class running 7.766 seconds at 159.12 mph to win by about 17 inches.

South Central Division racers head to Houston for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals this weekend, April 26-28. Next up for Texas Motorplex is their Fast Friday and Mega Mopar Action, April 26-27.

Saturday

ENNIS, Texas – Day two is complete and eliminations are underway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Old School Showdown event at Texas Motorplex.  Racers in nine classes are competing for championship points, and cash and contingency awards of more than $150,000 along with the coveted NHRA “Wally” trophy. 

Gates open on Sunday at 8 a.m. as eliminations continue at 9 a.m. for all classes including the division’s Orteq Top Sportsman, Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster and Comp eliminator categories.

Friday

ENNIS, Texas – NHRA South Central division racers are at Texas Motorplex for this weekend’s action in the Old School Showdown NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.  The event is the second of six South Central divisional events in the 2013 season where competitors will earn points toward both national and divisional championships.  Racers made qualifying and time trial runs today with racers in Comp, the Orteq Top Sportsman and the Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster classes highlighting the day’s action. 

Saturday’s gates open at 8 a.m. with final qualifying and time trials for all classes.  Comp, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will a qualifying pass at noon followed by round 1 of eliminations and the Old School Showdown that kicks off at 3 p.m. with opening ceremonies.  The Texas Blown Fuel Association and the Southwest Jr. Fuel Association are both part of the Showdown with runs scheduled for 5 & 8 p.m.  Tickets are $15 each day for adults, children 6-15 are just $5 and kids 5 and under are free with a paid adult.  For more information please call Texas Motorplex, (972) 878-2641 or visit www.texasmotorplex.com.

The event is one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s Orteq Top Sportsman Series, Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster Series and NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will run in conjunction with the event.

Saturday’s action is highlighted by the second annual Texas Motorplex Old School Showdown featuring old school hot rods from the Texas Blown Fuel Association and the Southwest Jr Fuel Association and an old school Jet Train performance by KC Jones as the Motorplex turns back the clock for some Saturday night family-fun entertainment.

Gates at Texas Motorplex open at 8 a.m. each day. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify twice on Friday at noon and 4 p.m. and have one session on Saturday at noon. Saturday’s Showdown starts at 3 p.m. with Opening Ceremonies.  Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman run round one at 6 p.m. on Saturday with round two slated for Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2013 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2013 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2013 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division’s team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2013 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

oRTEQ Top Sportsman Series: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships. The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500. Top Sportsman racers may run the six South Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in the other NHRA divisions.

SUNSET RACECRAFT TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Dragster class are vying for division championships. The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500.  NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA’s Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions’ purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
